It is widely known that banks, especially those with large branch networks, are undergoing high visibility transformations to reduce retail operating costs and expand marketing and customer service presence. The transformations are so dramatic, that collectively, they are frequently referred to as the new era of retail banking. However, it is also known (receiving considerable media attention) that these transformations are not without controversy.
Extensive studies have revealed that banks lose money on more than half of their customers, primarily because such customers use expensive, in-branch personnel for banking transactions and services. It is also known that the same transactions and services can be provided by Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) and other technology-based systems for approximately one-quarter of the cost. Adding to these impacting statistics, banks are currently faced with increased competition from non-bank financial services providers. And unlike banks, service providers do not maintain expensive bank-like branch networks.
